My Flourish

She’s out! As that old saying goes, I knew there was a thinner person hiding inside of me but I always managed to shut her up by feeding her. Well that’s not my story anymore!
For years, I have lost and regained the same 20 pounds. Each time I gained it back, I gained a little more.  As my weight climbed I lost myself, I was so unhappy, always tired and had become painfully insecure.  My weight had become such a burden emotionally and physically.
With the help of Flourish I lost more than 30 pounds. Since losing the weight I feel so much better about myself and I have become very active.  I workout at a gym several times a week and enjoy the yoga, spin and boot camp classes. Besides getting healthy, I had three personal goals that I wanted to accomplish. The first was to do a 5k. I did it and actually enjoyed it. I felt so strong and fit when I crossed that finish line. Frequently, I looked up at the Manitou Springs Incline thinking I wanted to climb it and see Colorado Springs from the top but for the past 13 years my weight had kept me for attempting this. That was an emotional journey; with each step I learned how to accept my new smaller and healthier self. By the time I reached the top I realized that I had learned how to have fun and smile again. I also wanted to be at my pre-pregnancy size before my daughter’s twentieth birthday. Oh what a feeling it was to zip up a dress, with ease, that I had worn prior to my pregnancy. I am proud to say that I am so much healthier and that I have also accomplished these three goals.

At first, the eating plan and the little caloric intake was a little intimidating. But I just followed the plan on a day-by-day basis. I think the three big factors for me was realistic motivation (developing new healthy habits as opposed to “looking better”), discipline in following the plan, and a good support system. I can’t recall ever once experiencing out of control hunger or a desire to binge. I just didn’t think about it or dwell on it, but did “what I was told.” I also developed a working out routine that I remained faithful to. With all these things, the pounds just came off. I am feeling a lot better and now more confident that I can and will keep the lbs off, now that I have the information to eat right and not go back to old habits.

It didn't start easy. My husband tried to help me and advice to live healthy, feeling good about myself and looking good. Instead of listening at the right time, I left myself from the normal 150lbs to 245lbs. My excuse was I was a housewife and taking care of the kids and always busy, never made time for myself.  Finally for 15 year of denying myself to live a healthy lifestyle, I noticed I was putting on weight. I was sent to the emergencies room with two kidney stones then shortly after had gallbladder surgery. I was depressed for 4 years, didn't want pictures taken of me and I was always tired, my cholesterol was high and on and on.

Finally it was a year 2001 and we moved back to Colorado. My husband opened a weight loss clinic and that’s when things started to change for me. That year I decided that I was going to be a new person and wanted to turn my life 100 degrees with my health. So I started praying to get the strength and courage to do what I thought  was impossible. i went to my husband  and asked him what do, “I am  ready to listen”, so he coached me with the nutrition. I started walking and modified my grocery list so my whole family knew that I was serious and needed their help so we can all be healthy. I also started reading about nutrition and wellness and would asking questions constantly. Little did i know, the first month didn't loose much weight, then the second month and third minus 45lbs. Since then from size 3X. I'm now 10.

I am motivated to encourage men and women not to delay something as important as your health and to keep your muscles toned. I wish i would have started earlier, because now it takes more effort to stay fit.

I eat healthier than ever, dance 5 times a week; work out at the gym 6 times a week. I’ve hiked the incline twice getting more than half way. I feel 20 again! I thank the Lord Jesus, my husband and my children to help me to achieve and live and feel better than ever, I have more energy than ever and enjoy my life.

Thanks!!

"I had tried several different weight loss methods, including diet and exercise over the past couple of years, but I just couldn’t be consistent enough to get the results I wanted. I finally decided that I would need professional help and searched for a medical weight loss center. I called Flourish and got an appointment that very same day. This was the day that everything changed.  The Flourish staff is very courteous and helpful. They encourage you to reach your goals and support you when you falter. This program is special because there is a behavioral component that targets thoughts and feelings that occur when you tend to make less healthy choices. There are many benefits to this program; they teach you how to live a healthier life, looking and feeling better is only a bonus! I think about food differently now, and thanks to Flourish, I think about myself differently as well."

" I get cheered on every month and reminded about protein intake, exercise which is a helpful motivator. I think I might lose my focus without Flourish's help and food products. I enjoy coming here."

"Gary and I went hiking Saturday. I suggested we try Waldo Canyon to see how far I could go now that I’ve lost 45 lbs. We made it the whole 7 miles! Waldo Canyon climbs 1,000 feet. You first go up and then down the canyon and then back up to get out. It’s an amazing hike! You might recall I have mild COPD from years of smoking, even though I quit in 1992. I thought I would never see the beautiful views from mountain hiking trails again because my breathing was so limited. From the top of Waldo Canyon’s Trail I had to stop for a moment to take in the beauty. It was an emotional moment for me. I got tired, but my breathing was great! I know losing the weight has made the difference because I haven’t changed anything else. Thank you for helping me take my life back!"

"Choosing to come [here] was one of the best decisions I have ever made. It has been wonderful having the support and tools I needed to help me towards reaching my goal. I have learned so much and love telling people, "No, I'm not on a diet. I'm changing my life!" Before joining, I thought I had tried everything.... working out at the gym constantly, several diets and really felt like something was wrong with me. I just couldn't lose the weight no matter what I tried! Well, it turned out I was still consuming more calories than I thought. Keeping the food journal and having a calorie goal made all the difference for me. Also, knowing that I didn't have to kill myself at the gym, just walk 30 min a day was great! I still have about 10 pounds before reaching my goal but, I'm excited about it! I have found new foods that I enjoy and new ways of preparing some of my old favorites. I don't feel like I am missing out- I still dine out with my husband and friends, I just choose healthier. And,I am aware of everything I eat. I still have ice cream (skinny cow)! I even enjoy a hamburger with extra lean beef, whole grain bread, thick slices of tomato, lettuce, onion and pickles! And, gotta love that creamy Greek yogurt with lots of protein! I started in a size 14/16 in September and wore up to an 18 a few years ago.  Now, I'm starting the new year in a size 9.  It is so rewarding eating healthy and having control of my size. Thank you Colorado Springs Medical Weight Loss Staff! If you have made the choice to change your life, I am excited for you! WE CAN DO IT!"

"I really want to thank the entire staff at Flourish for changing my life! When I came to your office in January my goal was to lose 50 lbs. As of today, I have lost 60 lbs. within  a six month period and I am now on your maintenance program. I have gone from a size 2X to a size 10P and even some clothes are a size 8P. I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful I feel since these changes. I've tried many other diets but none has even come close to the success I've had over the past six months from following your recommendations and from what I've learned. Keeping a food journal and having a calorie goal each day made a big difference for me. Other reasons for my success, having my own personal nutritional counselor and Dr Harbison paying attention to my individual needs, and providing the time needed to understand my concerns with my weight loss.  Thank you again for my new quality of life and renewing my self confidence!"

"I not only have lost weight on this program but have learned the tools to make a lifestyle change. I have learned what foods to eat that really fills me up and what is healthy. The tools that I learned I have applied in other atmospheres such as eating out and /or out with friends. I feel that some foods I just have to give up or else I will get back to where I was, over weight and unhappy, but mostly it's about balance. I think that I will always struggle with portion size but it is easier to keep it under control now that I have the knowledge." If there was one thing that she would tell about the program to others is; " Even if you have tried a lot of other programs try it, give it three months and just try it, and stick with it. You will see the result. The first months is a shock but after you get over that first month it's worth it!"
